DIY Wireless Wall Lamp

How I used the magic light trick in the boys room makeover

A few years ago I was sitting on the couch scrolling Pinterest like any other day when I ran across the magic light trick by Brooke from Nesting With Grace. I knew I wanted to try it but I didn’t really have a good place in mind. Fast forward to this year, my husband and I bought this house and the idea came flooding back. I decided the first place I wanted to do a DIY wireless wall lamp would be the boys room.

The Inspiration

Now, like I said above, I saw another blogger do this years ago, but since then there have been a lot of other bloggers trying this hack as well.

In Brooke’s original post, that I read, she used really strong velcro to secure her puck lights in place. However, I think she suggests securing the puck light to a pvc fitting and screwing it right in like a light bulb. You can read more about it (here).

How I did it

Now this is for my small town folks out there (HEYYY), I don’t have a big hardware store near where I live. I had already used up the mental capacity I had for hour-long drives to Lowes or Home Depot. My neighborhood hardware store didn’t have the pvc fittings so I had to get a little creative, which like I’ve said before is more fun anyways.

So what is a girl to do when she can’t follow the tutorial? Improvise! I used what I had to make it work and it turned out great.

What you will need

  • Puck lights
  • Wall lamp (I bought the pair because it was more affordable)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks

Not affiliate links just what I used

I bought my puck lights at Walmart. They come with many lights, a remote, and even batteries.

That last part made me way too happy, because I’m always the person who forgets to buy batteries! But anyways, I picked those up along with my normal things and went back home.

Earlier that day, my lamps had arrived from Amazon and I had spray painted them. Yes, I spray painted brand new lamps, they turned out great, sometimes you gotta risk it to get the biscuit.

I was so excited to see if my idea would work, I sat down and tried it right away.

I first put batteries in the puck light and made sure it worked.

Removed the plug in wire by cutting it and pulling it out.

Unscrewed the piece of the lamp that holds the lamp shade in place

Put a small bead of hot glue on the rim with my glue gun.

~ I used hot glue because I mostly just needed something to keep the light in one place, since all the weight is being held by the lamp itself. If your light will be hanging downward then you will need something stronger

I secured the puck light to the hot glue.

Put the lamp shade on.

Screwed the piece back in like normal.

Lastly, I secured the lamp to the wall following the instructions and I was done!

I love this hack because, I can control it with the remote so when I say lights out, I MEAN lights out *click*. Also, I like that there’s no wires hanging from the wall next to my kids’ heads. It kind’ve sketched me out because they are kids so I know that they would try to pull on the wire and I would hate for them to get hurt. With this DIY wireless wall lamp its problem solved for me!

I needed some extra light but I didn’t want wires or a table lamp that would inevitably break just like the ones before it. Whether it be from a ball, wrestling, or just throwing things in general, my kids have found a way to break three lamps by knocking them off the nightstands. So a simple table lamp was not an option.

Video tutorial

I have included some short time lapse videos so that you can quickly see exactly how I did this DIY wireless wall lamp.

A couple of notes

  • I chose hot glue because I know it is easily removable, in case I made a mistake. It is also all I had on hand. If you feel more comfortable using something more permanent, then by all means do you.
  • If you are installing a light that is facing downward I suggest you either use something stronger than hot glue or get a pvc fitting. (they are less than a dollar a piece) You will need your light to be more secure since it is working against gravity and you don’t want it to randomly fall on someone.
  • There are a ton of ways you can do this hack, get creative or just follow one of the million tutorials out there. It honestly depends on your living situation and your style.

I hope that this post inspired you to go find a spot where you need some extra light and put up one of these DIY wireless wall lamps because they are ridiculously easy and make such an impact. Thanks for stopping by! Stay tuned for the rest of this room makeover! You can read about our first project for this room here!
