Ooooh The Drama: The Laundry Room/Boys Room Hardcore Origin Story

You ever looked at a room and thought you know what would make this room better? If I made it SMALLER.

No?…. Me either….

I’m lying. That’s exactly what I thought looking at our laundry room, so I decided to split it in half.

I’m from Texas,

where the bigger the better. Big burgers, big steaks, big cities and big houses. But one random day I looked at my laundry room and thought this room is TOO big. So what’s a girl to do? Overthink it and then jump in without a concrete plan? You got it.

So this girl, naively optimistic, took her idea that kept her up all night to her husband who confirmed that it wasn’t totally crazy. I couldn’t tell if he was just as crazy as me because I mean he has been married to me for 11 years; crazy does rub off you know? But I chose not to dwell on it too much because now that he was on board, we were both liable if the idea failed. And he was footing the bill soooooo…. Let’s go!

So I stood back while he measured. Once. Twice. Three times for good measure. Probably more, I’m not sure. I was there gleefully swaying, heel to toe, heel to toe, occasionally holding the tape measure when he handed it to me. He said words. He explained. But I planted the seed. My job was done until it got to the pretty stage. My mind was on paint colors.

Then he said something that snapped me out of my design trance, “What if we make half of it the boys room until we save up to finish out the attic?” My mind went from the beautiful vast fields of design choices and color combinations to Harry Potter. Why would I want to shove my boys into a room that was basically the size of a modern day master bedroom closet? I was appalled! My flabber had been sufficiently gasted, if you will.

So with my knuckles turning as white as the pearls I clutched, I begrudgingly agreed. He looked so excited sharing the idea. And I can’t say no to him when he looks so cute and excited, hence the four kids we now have to make room for, but I digress. Best to keep the one with the money happy, right? Compromise and all, right?

I’m kidding. I have to give credit where it’s due… The idea was a good one and now I was eager for the challenge of designing a small quirky space. BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD! DUN DA DA DUUUN!! *superhero noise. Go ahead, read it again with that context.*

So now we have an idea and purpose. That seems quite enough for an origin story. Up next, I will share the actual plan!

Until then,
