This bedroom gave me a run for my money! It was a lot of hard work and a lot of “making it work” that went into this makeover, but I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I am so excited to show you how this simple and classic boys room came together!
Failing to plan is planning to fail… right?
This room plan is the only one that stayed the same from the old house. I knew when we looked at this house that the plan would work even better here than it would’ve in our previous house.
I wanted a classic, timeless room that would be a good starting point for the boys to build upon. I didn’t want to pick a solid theme because their interests change so often. But I guess I can’t talk because like their interests, this plan changed quite a bit. With the muted blue (Brewster Gray by Benjamin Moore) trim and off white (Olympic Mountains by Benjamin Moore) walls, the vibe stayed the same.
How it went down
A lot of small projects went into this simple and classic boys room makeover. Each one came with their own challenges but I wouldn’t change a thing!
Wall to wall
The first project we did for this room is this beadboard accent wall. It was a fairly quick project with such a big impact. I love the texture it adds and the classic vibe. We hit a bit of a bump when they couldn’t cut it at the store but I was surprised to find out we could cut it with a box cutter. You can read more about that project here.
The “why’d you do that” shelves
When I decided to squeeze out some extra storage behind the doors I didn’t expect it to be so controversial. “Why’d you do that” was exactly my aunt’s reaction.
These shelves are glorified door stops, y’all. The space behind the door is 11 inches and the shelves are only 9 inches deep, leaving room for the door to open completely.
This was my first time using sheetrock screws and a drill by myself. Total beginner here, people!
The shelves were a learning experience to say the least. I made a mistake in my measurements and spaced out the shelves farther than I wanted originally but it turned out I actually liked them more spaced out!
Wala! MAGIC!
I used the magic light trick to add some wall lamps. I bought a pair of swing arm wall sconces from amazon and spray painted them in rustoleum satin bronze. I love how this style of sconce really solidified the direction I wanted to go in this simple and classic boys room. I mean look at them, they ARE simple in shape but the style is classic. And I think the new color just adds that little something.
The Wind-ohhhs
I decided to do some simple window trim on these windows. I knew I wanted to frame them out but I didn’t want anything too bulky because the windows were already huge as it is. The trim also needed to match the existing trim in the room and the rest of the house.
These windows taught me a really important lesson that I feel all aspiring home renovators should know… It’s not square and it’s not level. Nope. Never. Just trust me. I want your house to look bomb and I don’t want you wasting money on extra trim if you mess up. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Okay? We good? Great.
The domino dresser
This Ikea rast dresser threw me for a loop. I was right on schedule until this dresser makeover turned into a fail.
This project started the domino effect to one of the most extensive projects of this whole room makeover. When it didn’t work out, I had to go back to the drawing board.
I knew I wanted a wood element but since the dresser was no longer it I had to figure out something else…enter antique wood beds.
The project that shall not be named
These beds took the best of me!
They took every bit of willpower I had just to not throw them out the window!
I found these bunk beds on Facebook marketplace and the shape was perfect. There was only one problem: they were covered in purple glitter.
“Oh I can just strip that off real quick and boom new beds” oh dear me! So young and naive.
Now that I am about a month older, I know better. Those beds took me a whole month! I still haven’t recovered mentally to write a full blog post about it. But it’s coming because it was the roughest month of my life (and I was 9 months pregnant in the Texas summer heat)
They were worth the work though, because they turned out great!
Back, back, forth and forth
After the beds, I went back to the dresser. I gave it a good sanding and I decided to paint it with white chalk paint.
I spray painted the knobs with some gold spray paint.
Bringing it all together
After all the projects were done, it was time to style their room. A lot of items were thrifted like the globe and the accordion rack but I also had a lot of decor from before the makeover (mostly from target and hobby lobby). It all blended together so seamlessly.
After it was all said and done, this room came together better than I could have imagined and I can’t wait to see how it evolves as my boys grow. Thanks for stopping by!
